There are two types of pedals - platform and clipless. Platform are standard pedals found on most bikes after they have left the factory. Clipless pedals are generally an upgrade made at a later stage by the owner. Platform pedals are where your foot is placed on the top of the pedal but not directly connected. With clipless your shoe and pedal are connect directly. Clipless pedals give an improved and more efficient pedalling action. You will also need to have a pair of cycling shoes to use clipless pedals.
Clipless pedals are divided into two – Road Pedals (Look Style) and SPD. Road pedals are aimed at the road bike cyclist and have a large plastic triangular cleat, which sits proud from the sole of the shoe, connect to the shoe via 3 bolts. SPD’s are aimed at the mountain / leisure cyclist. The cleat is smaller, metal and recessed into the sole of the shoe. All pedals come complete with cleats.
