£140M Cycling Plan Unveiled
21 January 2008

A record £140m investment in cycling has been announced by Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Transport today, allowing half a million ten year old children across the UK to take part in cycle training.
The aim is to cut road congestion, improve air quality and create more opportunities for children to exercise. The money will be given to Cycling England, an organisation set up to promote cycling as part of the government's strategy to reduce child obesity. The project will also involve the creation of 250 safe links to schools and connect around 500 more schools to the National Cycle Network.
Ms Kelly comments "Being able to cycle safely is an important life skill and I want to give more children the opportunity to do it and encourage more adults to reach for their bikes. By 2012, I expect 500,000 more children to have been able to learn the necessary skills so that they can cycle safely and responsibly."
